Why Doing More Marketing Isn’t Getting You More Clients in 2026

more marketing

More marketing isn’t the problem — the wrong marketing is. Here’s what actually gets you more clients.

Businesses know keeping the pipeline full is an important part of their business. Almost every business – especially service-based businesses – understands a steady stream of leads means a steady stream of new clients. It’s the lifeblood of a service business.

As a result, businesses jump on the marketing hamster wheel. They are running Google ads. They’re attending trade shows and networking events. They’re posting (often sporadically) on social media platforms. They’re sending emails and trying cold outreach tactics.

Business owners, marketing teams, and entrepreneurs are busy marketing their business. They believe in marketing. Yet, they still aren’t getting the numbers they want. And running on this marketing hamster wheel is overwhelming and exhausting?

With this much effort, you can’t help but wonder, “Why isn’t my marketing working?”

I hate to break this to you, but you won’t get more clients by doing more marketing. Probably seems like an odd thing for a marketer to say, but hear me out. I didn’t say don’t do marketing. Instead focus on the right marketing.

Ditch the marketing overwhelm and create a small business marketing strategy that actually works.

Let’s look at 4 reasons why doing more marketing won’t lead to more clients.

1. Your messaging is all wrong.

You can spend millions on marketing but if people don’t understand exactly what you do and how you help them solve a problem, it’s money wasted.

Businesses struggle to create a message that clearly communicates and resonates with their ideal clients and customers. Instead, their messaging is unclear, complicated, and fragmented.

You’re trying to tell potential customers everything all at once. You’re overwhelming them with features! Options! Choices! more marketing

Instead you should focus on one problem you solve. Spark curiosity. Get people to say, “Tell me more.”

Don’t pop the question on the first date. Customers will go running for the nearest exit.

Better messaging is the secret to better marketing, which leads to more clients.

2. You’re not reaching your clients where they are.

You’re listening to gurus instead of your clients. An expert says you need to be on TikTok. Another expert says YouTube is the only way! Your team thinks Instagram is the best option. What about LinkedIn? And what’s all the chatter about Substack?

I get it. It’s easy to fall into the shiny tactic trap. You jump on every new tool or social platform without pausing to consider: Is this where my clients hang out?

I asked this question to a client recently and they honestly didn’t know. They weren’t sure which social media platforms their clients used or where they spend time online. They had some guesses. So, we created a plan to gather that information through one-on-one conversations with key clients and through a client survey.

You can be active and engaged on any platform you want. But I find most businesses have limited time and resources. So why not spend your energy on marketing platforms that matter the most and where you’re most likely to connect with your target audience?

3. You’re not showing up consistently.

Spoiler alert: The “post and ghost” marketing approach is not successful.

This applies to blog posts and articles, social media platforms, email marketing, video content … any place you want people to find you. It even applies to networking events if you do a lot of business in your local community.

It’s easy to get excited about a new platform, content calendar, or video editing tool. We commit to consistency and then …

  • You get busy with client work and content simply gets pushed to the back burner.
  • You run out of ideas or aren’t sure what to say.
  • You don’t get immediate results and discouragement sets in.
  • You’ve tried to do too much.

Honestly, this has happened to me too. And I should know better!

Consistency is much easier when you have a clear, repeatable message. You don’t have to wonder what to say. You already know.

Consistency is easier when you’re focused on the right places. This goes back to understanding where your clients are. Instead of trying to be everywhere, you can focus on the places that matter – online, in person, or both.

Remember, marketing is a long game. Don’t give up too soon. I know it can be tough to keep going when you feel like your account is barely growing. But stick with it. Showing up consistently gives people time to get to know you.

4. You’ve neglected the human side of your marketing.

more marketingWhen you’re busy building a business, it’s easy to get into task mode. Your marketing becomes a checklist: Post to LinkedIn. Write an email. Check on the Google Ads spend.

You forget you’re a human selling to other humans. No matter the size of your business, don’t lose sight of the fact people buy from people. And, more importantly, they buy from people they know, like, and trust.

Bring the human side to your marketing. I call this marketing hospitality. Infuse your business with hospitality at every step – including as customers are first learning about your business online or via social media.

When you focus on relationships and making sure customers (potential and current) feel seen and valued, more sales will come.

Doing more marketing isn’t the way to get new clients. Doing the right marketing is.

When you show up consistently with the right message in the right places and with a heavy dose of hospitality, the clients will come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn’t more marketing getting me more clients?

Doing more marketing usually just means doing more of the wrong marketing. If your message isn’t clear, you’re marketing in the wrong places, you’re inconsistent, or you’ve lost the human side of your business, adding more activity won’t fix the underlying problem — it’ll just create more noise.

What’s the biggest mistake businesses make with their marketing message?

Trying to say everything at once. When you list every feature, benefit, and option up front, you overwhelm potential clients instead of sparking their curiosity. A clearer approach is to focus on the one problem you solve and get people curious enough to ask, “Tell me more.”

How do I know which marketing platforms are right for my business?

Start with your clients, not the latest platform trend. Ask them directly, or survey them, to find out where they actually spend their time. Then, focus your energy there instead of trying to be everywhere at once.

Why does consistency matter so much in marketing?

Because “post and ghost” doesn’t build trust. People need repeated exposure to get to know, like, and trust a business before they buy. Consistency gets much easier once your message is clear and you know exactly where you’re showing up.

What is “marketing hospitality”?

It’s the idea of treating your marketing like a human-to-human interaction, not just a checklist of tasks. When potential and current customers feel seen and valued — not just marketed to — it builds the kind of relationship that leads to more sales.
